Back in the days when I was not in the photography word, I saw a magnificent  picture of a night sky with a lot of stars.I thought that it was photoshop because the photo was not even close to the night sky that i see with my eyes. After i got my first dslr(a nikon D3000) i tried to shoot the milky way galaxy and here is the result:

The only thing that you need is a dslr. (what is a dslr?)
  • Get away from the city lights. You have to find a clear sky without light pollution.
  • Know when and where to look. You will be able to see the milky way with your naked eye.You can try a phone app like google sky map to locate sagittarius which is close to the center of milky way.In addition, you can download Stellarium and see the location of the milky way for a given time.
  • Camera settings.First of all, you need a tripod or a stable place to put your camera. We have to get a lot of light into the camera, for the kit lens at 18mm, set the shutter speed to 30sec,3200 iso and 3.5 aperture. If you have a lens that can go larger than 3.5 aperture go for it and lower the iso or shutter speed. If you get star trails try to lower the shutter speed and up the iso.Dont forget to turn on manual focus and set the focus to infinity, you can do that by focusing on a very distant light.

Thats it!Go outside and try it by yourself you will be amazed by the result!
